The Village Garden Club of Sewickley
75 Years of the Best Dirt in Sewickley!
The Village Garden Club of Sewickley (VGC) was founded in 1927 to “encourage an interest in gardens and gardening, further the knowledge and preservation of our native flora, and to work to prevent our natural resources from being destroyed or exploited.”
Membership in VGC provides many exciting opportunities for novices and seasoned gardeners alike. Members share an interest in horticulture, photographing gardens and flora, the fun of flower arranging and flower shows, as well as promoting conservation and environmental causes locally and nationally. Club members benefit from the expertise shared by fellow gardeners and learning about garden sustainability is a priority. The 65 members of VGC give back to the community in number of ways including civic beautification projects and educational workshops for children.
At Monthly Membership Meetings, held September through June, members socialize and increase their gardening knowledge with a variety of informational programs featuring guest speakers. Each November, members join with another western Pennsylvania club, the Garden Club of Allegheny County, to sponsor a nationally recognized speaker for a joint meeting. For a schedule of this year’s monthly meeting programs, click Programs.
Committee’s play an important role in the club’s operation. The Conservation, Flower Arranging, Horticulture and Photography committees, organize activities and projects where members learn new skills through a “hands on experience.” The committee work is not only educational but also full of camaraderie and fun! VGC is a proud member of The Garden Club of America (GCA.) Village is the only garden club located in the Sewickley Valley affiliated with the GCA, a national leader in horticulture, conservation and civic improvement. Currently, several club members hold leadership positions in this prestigious organization.
The GCA offers many benefits to member clubs. Through the Visiting Gardens Program club members can visit spectacular gardens across the country. There are opportunities to participate in the GCA horticulture and legislative conferences as well as workshops. Educational publications are available to members on-line. To learn more about the GCA, the extensive resources it provides to members and the many projects it supports, click GCA website.
VGC also enjoys membership in the Sewickley Civic Garden Council (SCGC.) For information about SCGC and its involvement in civic beautification projects visit the SCGC website.
